John The Gun – Red Buddha Lounge – Lyndhurst, NJ – 3/26/16

While going through my hard drive of photos I was going through my concert photos and found a file of photos I’ve never posted on here before. In full transparency, I honestly must’ve forgot about posting these photos. Looking at my list of concerts during this month, on the 24th I was in New York photographing The Movielife then on the 25th photographing The Movielife again with The Early November in Philly and lastly back to New York on the 30th to photograph Vance Joy. Obviously, I was running around at this time and living in New Jersey, only way I could’ve done two New York shows. This show must’ve gotten lost in the shuffle when posting here because I did post photos from this show on social media.

Now writing a review on this show is nearly impossible because it has been eight years, and again in full transparency, I not only don’t remember this show I don’t even remember this venue/bar. After researching it turns out this venue is now closed and from Google Maps it is still standing? I am unsure, but what I can say is I know John The Gun played great as always. Unfortunately, I didn’t photograph the other bands because I must’ve been running out of energy from photographing so much during that time. According to a Facebook event page this show was billed as Emo Night NJ with John The Gun and three other bands. This wasn’t an ‘Emo Night’ that are happening all over the map with a DJ, but a Emo Night with just live local bands.

At this point I have become good friends with John The Gun through mutual friends and this was my third time photographing them. They were also a three piece at this point for they became a four piece at a later date, and all they had released at this time was their full-length Tread Eternal. Even if I wasn’t friends with the band, John The Gun was/is a great band with some very talented musicians. I always thought if they got on some more shows with bigger bands, they would’ve gain a lot more fans because they fit right in with bands like Thrice, Taking Back Sunday, and Circa Survive.

However, right before the pandemic happened, they released an EP, Sleepwalker, had some shows lined up, but then the pandemic happened. The pandemic was tough on bands in general, but local/smaller bands, it seemed worse on them. A lot of bands just quietly disappeared or put the band on the sidelines for the time being. John The Gun seemed to have taken the latter for they haven’t posted much on social media since the pandemic. I am sure they will regroup at some point, but when marriages and kids come about that is always the priority. This I know myself. Whenever John The Gun do show back up I hope to cover the show and I will make sure to post it here, and not 8 years later.
