Big Bad Voodoo Daddy – Gillioz Theatre – Springfield, MO – 10/5/24

After all these years photographing Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, there are two things I can count on, one, a great swinging show, and two, photographing them in beautiful historic theatres. Gillioz Theatre is a nice intimate theatre that reminded me of the theatre I frequented growing up in Bethlehem, PA. That theatre is no more, but it is always great to see other theatres still in use and restored to their beautiful original self.

As for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, they always put on a fantastic show with always playing the major hits from their biggest album, Americana Deluxe, but also paying tribute to their influences like Cab Calloway and Louie Armstrong. A surprising twist to their set though was when they highlighted “Who’s That Creepin'” from their album This Beautiful Life, an album that has plenty of gems that aren’t usually played live. Scotty Morris explained that the song was about coming home from touring a lot to an empty home. Definitely a highlight to hear and throwing in a deep cut like that was a great surprise.

For a band that has all original members for 35 years, is able to spend most of the year on the road and dare I say haven’t aged, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is doing something right. They are a band still celebrating the swing and big band sound and no one else does it quite like them, let alone this long. This may have been my 7th time photographing them, but even if it is my 10th or 14th, each time I leave their show I feel revived and delighted. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is carry a torch that I hope never goes out, from their interactive and transient live show to their long body of work, they are a band that shouldn’t be looked over.
