Returning to Musikfest once again was local Philadelphia basement soul band the Dull Blue Lights. Performing one of their most exhilarating sets I’ve seen yet at the Musikfest Cafe stage on the south side campus of Musikfest, Dull Blue Lights’ hour and half set featured covers and original material. The band, now a four piece, still sound as tight as ever and always evolving their sound that pleases current fans while bringing in newer fans. Of course, for this festival crowd, the covers from the likes of The Beatles and Sam The Sham & The Pharaos’ ‘Wooly Bully’ got the most reactions, but when original material was sprinkled in between it didn’t stop the crowd from dancing. There was even new material played which sounds just as invigorating as their debut album material, but no official date on when the new songs will make it to the speakers. The guys of Dull Blue Lights also had another date scheduled at Musikfest, August 9th, which was on main street at the same stage as last year. With two dates at Musikfest and their crowd getting bigger and bigger, maybe next year we will see Dull Blue Lights on the main stage of Musikfest opening for a big headliner.
